The last time most of us had a desk in our bedrooms was in our college dorms or while we were still in high school. Master bedroom office ideas tend to range from a tiny secretaire in an unused corner or a fold-up surface that can barely fit a 15″ laptop – and that simply won’t do.

If you’re among those who have to make do with a corner of your bedroom in lieu of proper office space, know that a desk in your bedroom doesn’t necessarily have to cramp your style – or your sleeping quarters. If it helps at all, President Andrew Johnson had a nifty office nook in his bedroom too.

Using a desk as a space divider

As demonstrated by interior architect Rob Kleinschmidt in his Palm Springs bungalow bedroom, a desk can be a welcome addition to a standard-sized master bedroom. In this holiday escape home, Kleinschmidt had both the bed and custom, faux-leather lined desk positioned so that they both offer a lovely garden view.

Having a custom desk with a divider that doubles as a headboard crafted just for your space is ideal unless you’re short on time, funds or patience. A different way to go is to use a receptionist-style desk, leaning it up against the back of the bed’s headboard.

Getting the corner home office

If a spare corner is, literally, all you have to work with, there are plenty of corner desks to choose from. Unlike typical, small corner desks that provide little work area, L-shaped corner desks afford plenty of work space while still fitting well in an unused bedroom nook.

We recommend a simple L-shaped corner desk, like the one pictured below, with useful shelf space. A little extra storage space that can accommodate items not necessarily related to work can go a long way in a bedroom.
